OUR STORY

Dr. Dave Johnson was a cherished father and grandfather who grew up and served as a dentist in the Navy in the northern Pittsburgh area. At the age of 83, he began taking voice lessons with local vocal Melody Molinaro. Despite his dementia diagnosis, he could still recall the lyrics to many songs from his past, eagerly anticipating his weekly singing lessons that offered him a much-needed escape. Using a walker, he would leave each session with his signature phrase, "I'm out like a herd of turtles!"

After Dave's passing, his wife, daughter-in-law, granddaughters, and other family members, along with volunteers, collaborated with Melody to establish "Herd of Turtles" in his honor. We now host enjoyable and inclusive karaoke parties for veterans living with dementia in residential programs.
